Some silver pieces are meant to carry a name, initials or dates.

A few of the pieces my grandmother passed down to me have her initials on them. Engraving CARMA's pieces felt like the natural thing to do - so I went looking for the steadiest hands.

Engraving, at CARMA, is done by hand. Our engravers print the letters and transfer the inked design onto the silver. Then, with an extremely sharp tool, they trace over the ink by hand, cutting each line into the silver.

A machine repeats itself exactly; a hand never quite does. The small differences are what make the engraving yours. Cut into sterling silver, it stays as long as the piece does - long enough to be passed on again.

Frequently asked questions

Which pieces can be engraved?

Right now, engraving is offered on our book jewels — Sophie and Anne. We're a small atelier, and we'd rather do a few things properly than everything at once. Brooches and hairpins will be engravable in time.

What can I have engraved?

A name, initials, or a date. We start names with one uppercase letter and the rest in lowercase script, unless you ask otherwise — it sits quieter on a narrow piece. Initials and dates are traditionally capitals. Dates are cut short (12.05.26) unless you'd like the full year.

How many letters or numbers fit?

Up to about 10 characters per side. If you're over the limit, please e-mail us at hello@carmacarmacarma.com

How do I order engraving?

Choose the option that matches what you'd like: Initials, A name or date, or Name and date on both sides from the piece's options. Then add your exact wording, font and placement to the special instructions before checking out.

Can I choose the font and placement?

Yes, Baskerville or English script, and top, middle, or bottom, horizontal or vertical. Just add your choice to the special instructions when you add the piece to your cart.

How long does it take?

Engraved pieces are made to order, so please allow a little longer than our usual dispatch time. If you're engraving for a specific date - a birthday, a wedding, a gift - tell us in the order notes and we'll do what we can to meet it.

Can engraved pieces be returned or exchanged?

No, because they're made for you, engraved pieces are final sale. This is also why we confirm the design with you first.
