Some silver pieces are meant to carry a name, initials or dates.

A few of the pieces my grandmother passed down to me have her initials on them. Engraving CARMA's pieces felt like the natural thing to do - so I went looking for the steadiest hand and the most patient person I could find.

Engraving, at CARMA, is done entirely by hand, by Daniel Houwer. Daniel has been practicing this craft for almost forty years.

Daniel prints the letters and transfers the inked design onto the silver. Then, with an extremely sharp tool, he traces over the ink by hand, cutting each line into the silver.

A machine repeats itself exactly; a hand never quite does. The small differences are what make the engraving yours. Cut into sterling silver, it stays as long as the piece does - long enough, perhaps, to be passed on again.

Hand engraving is available on the book jewels. Please include the following in the special instructions when checking out:

Placement 
Where on the jewel you'd like it: top (close to head), middle, or bottom.

Font 
Choose one of the following (keep scrolling to see examples of the fonts)

  • English Script
  • Baskerville Old Face
  • Edwardian Script

If you don't note a preference, we'll use English Script.

Letters or numbers
Please tell us whether you'd like capitals or lowercase, and note that there's a maximum of 6 letters per side.
